"When Harry Met Sally": Set a New Standard for Romantic Comedies
When Harry Met Sally (1989) is a film I've been told to watch for a long time and being February well...tis the season. This romantic comedy has the title of being a standard for the category, and I see why! Read here to see what I mean.
Sally gives Harry a ride to NYC after both graduate from the University of Chicago. Chance keeps favoring their meeting as we jump through their lives while looking for love. A friendship blossoms but with complications.
An iconic line comes from this film. It's "I'll have what she's having." I didn't know until watching the movie that it came from here, so now I'm thinking about where other iconic lines come from that have been around for decades. Anyways, this moment happens during the diner scene which you can look that up for yourself.
Meg Ryan, who plays Sally, may not be a household name today, but she was/still is the queen of romantic comedies. Ever heard of Sleepless in Seattle? That is her too. The chemistry between her and co-star Billy Cyrstal (voice of Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc.) transferred offset too. It wasn't romantic in real life but a friendship which interestingly is the question of the movie. Can men and women really only be friends?
The movie explores this in many ways. The two have a push and pull effect between them throughout. One well-directed and filmed scene is the two dancing at a New Year's Eve party. They are dancing close to each other, and they turn around in a circle. Both of their faces show a change in expression as they turn due to the moment. This continues throughout.
To me, the answer to the earlier question is simple, but the film doesn't really take a definite stance. Can men and women really only be friends? Yes. Don't think too hard on this. In the end, the answer is yes no matter what your personal moral beliefs are.
I can't really think of any major issues in this movie. The only thing I remember is wondering what happened to Sally's other friend from the restaurant in the beginning. She may have been at another friend's wedding scene, but I'm not too sure. The next paragraph CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS so be forewarned. Skip to the end if you desire to view the movie rating.
The ending is what you want. Harry confronts Sally with his love for her. It was there all along, and it took him a long time to realize this truth. The way it's done is even better. He proceeds to tell her the little things about her that make him love her. It's a very sweet moment.
Overall, it's a fantastic romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by the masses. Think of the little things you love about your significant other. My movie rating is A+.
