"The Sandlot": Baseball Classic~You're Killing Me Smalls!

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

The Sandlot (1993) is a baseball themed classic that some consider the best in the business. I had never seen one scene until two days ago. It was time. I'm an avid baseball fan (Go Braves!), so this was only a matter of time. Read here for the review! Spoilers may follow.

In 1962, Scottie Smalls (Tom Guiry) is new to the area, so it can be hard to make new friends. While he loves the idea of baseball, he isn't very good, and it's the neighborhood kids' passion.

All of the kid actors here do adequately. The one I'll point out is Hamilton "Ham" Porter played by Patrick Renna. He is the one you may see on graphic T-shirts with the quote exclaiming "You're killing me Smalls!" Everyone else in the movie does fine too including a small guest performance from James Earl Jones.

Being a baseball fan, it is interesting to watch this movie. Babe Ruth is a big deal to these kids obviously since many consider him the best of all time. It is his baseball that the kids are trying to recover from "The Beast". This beast is an immense dog that the kids are petrified of even seeing. They've lost over a hundred baseballs to that backyard, and the Babe Ruth signed ball falls victim. It's fun to watch them hatch several ways to retrieve the ball including vacuums, sticks and more. Also, for me, I enjoy watching them play baseball, and the scene where it's July 4th with all the fireworks has some great shots.

Anyone can enjoy the cinema piece, but I enjoy knowing the references. Many Milwaukee Braves pennants and memorabilia are around (became the ATL Braves 4 years later), and I really enjoy this aspect. A cool scene involved Babe Ruth in Benjamin Rodriguez's (Mike Vitar) dream. When exiting, Ruth picks up a Henry Aaron card, and he asks to keep the card. The reference is that Aaron would eventually break Babe Ruth's home run record. Aaron is the G.O.A.T in my opinion.

For the kind of film it is, it is pretty good. Some things could have been paced better for sure but no major changes I would make.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. It ranks decently high on baseball-themed films, and people should pay attention. My movie rating is B.
