"Lady and the Tramp": Disney Original and Classic

Updated: Mar 22, 2020

Lady and the Tramp (1955) is considered to be a Disney classic. How does this one compare to the other studio classics? Spoilers may be below.

Lady has a nice home with loving humans, friends (Jock and Trusty), and a comfortable life. When her humans have a baby, things get a little more complicated. Tramp is a street dog who does not want to be tied down to one house. The set up for the movie is simple and easy to follow. The conflict is through the dog catcher and the problems caused by Aunt Sarah. Although she is not a villain, she is pretty stupid. Most of Lady's troubles are caused by her. Her twin siamese cats cause a ruckus during their song number. I like their scene especially because I have a siamese cat at home myself.

Some good things about the movie include the song numbers. There are many great musical parts. Although these songs may not be as timeless as some of Disney's other film hits, it is still adequate. The most famous scene of the movie is undoubtedly the meatball. Tramp and Lady listen to music while getting a spaghetti and meatball dinner. Tramp memorably nudges Lady the last meatball, and this has been remembered ever since. Also, the voice acting is splendid. The characters represent international voices. British, American, Hispanic, Scottish and more are represented based on where the dog breed is from.

However, there are a couple of problems with the movie. Lady and Tramp need more interaction at the end of the film. You know a lot of time has passed, but you do not get the intimate details on why Tramp changed his mind about having one home. As soon as you think Trusty the hound is dead, there comes an immediate happy scene. It is okay since he did not really die, but the flow is thrown off. Another problem for me personally is really a nitpick type. You never find out what happens to the dogs in the pound. The pound does euthanize in the movie so do they die or not? It is something I wish we knew.

Although Lady and the Tramp is not one of my favorite Disney films, it is still a fun watch. I laughed and had a good time. My movie rating is B-.
