"Bad Boys 2": Action Packed

Updated: Mar 11, 2020

Bad Boys 2 (2003) debuted eight years after the original installment to it's fanbases delight. Some people include this film in the best action shots in any movie including fictional character Danny in the movie Hot Fuzz (click here for review). I decided to take a look as Martin Lawrence and Will Smith are bringing back the cop duo in Bad Boys for Life. Read here!

Per usual, Will Smith gives a solid performance. You can put him in a less than stellar movie, but he will always offer solid entertainment. Martin Lawrence has less on his resume, but he too gives you what you want. The chemistry carries over in this sequel with the usual bickering along with sincere moments of friendship. This time, we see that they were friends before partners. That's why some of the decisions are tougher as problems arise between the two.

We are introduced to Marcus' (Lawrence) sister Syd played by Gabrielle Union. She's a competent officer herself and brings something to the table. She's critical in the story because of who they are trying to bring down.

A man named Johnny Tapia is transporting tons of Ecstacy into Miami. Jordi Molla (Tapia) is a much better fleshed out antagonist than the first movie's villain. He is treacherous and charismatic. Unlike the first film, you weren't just waiting for Smith and Lawrence to show up again while seeing Tapia. The scenes were interesting and contributing.

I will agree with the action being top-notch. Like I've said before, Michael Bay can direct action sequences as good as anyone. I particularly liked the highway scene with cars literally being thrown at them. Then, there's the ending battle scene in Cuba with mansions blowing up. One shot from the movie is semi-famous showing Lawrence and Smith with the camera panning around them looking stoic. That picture is right below.

Also, like the first movie, the writing seems to be what the producers saw as important. However, more than a couple of scenes have too much of nothing happening. The film is nearly two and a half hours long with 30 minutes contributing not much. Cut it down, and I'd probably rate it a bit higher.

Overall, I like Bad Boys 2 more than the first. If you're looking for explosions, gunfights and a lot of banter, this movie is for you. My movie rating is B-.
