A Minecraft Movie Review

A Minecraft Movie was a theatrical experience like no other. When 15 guys get on a bus wearing suits for the memes listening to parody songs about the game, you know it's culturally relevant (yes, really did that). The dinner of choice was, of course, McDonalds where many got the Minecraft happy meal since the regular one was sold out. We hop back on the bus and arrive just as previews were starting to see A Minecraft Movie.

Do you like Jack Black? If you do, you'll enjoy this movie. If you don't, you might suffer a little bit. I'm not sure how much of this script was written for him versus him just doing his thing. Black played the famous "Steve" from the Minecraft game.

Fans should love seeing the world come to life with all the various references. What's really interesting is someone like me who never once played the game. I'm not really sure why. Several of my friends played it, but I digress.

So even if you've never played the game, is it an enjoyable to watch? I think so. Let's get this out of the way now. Very rarely will I say that the plot of the movie or the message isn't the point. So much doesn't make sense like why was the orb in a random mine in Idaho? They even poke fun at their own story sometimes for not making much sense.

Not having a cohesive plot goes against the point of making cinema, yet I'm giving A Minecraft Movie a pass. This movie only has one purpose, and that's to be entertaining. Watch Jack Black and Jason Momoa derp around and have some fun. If you can do that, you'll have a good time.

Part of the fun is that the film is very quotable. There's the already very famous "Chicken Jockey!" Please don't follow the trend of just trashing the theater at this point by the way. Of course, my movie group were all gentlemen and left it at cheers.

Others include "My Jeep Grand Cherokee", "First we mine, then we craft" and my favorite which was "Sorry about your finances." Those who have watched know.

When you realize Jared Hess, who is the director of Napolean Dynamite and Nacho Libre, helmed this film, it makes sense. Only someone with his sense of humor could pull it off. It's nowhere near the gold that is Napolean Dynamite, but it is not bad.

Honestly, it's worth a watch. For the type of film it is, it's very entertaining. I don't feel right rating this on my customary scale, so it can have two thumbs up instead.
