Hot Fuzz (2007) is a comedy/mystery/slasher flick that I truly understand, and it understands me. It can be hard to explain. I feel the need to watch it frequently. Since I first watched the movie freshman year of college, it entreated me, and I've seen it probably six times since. I realize this isn't a widely known film, so the review today is SPOILER FREE.
Simon Pegg stars as Nicholas Angel. He's a London officer who is so good at his job that his superiors feel the need to transfer him so they don't look bad. He ends up at a small town in the country called Sandford. This rustic village may look idyllic, but something sinister is lurking in the shadows.
I always like to look at acting. Simon Pegg is excellent as the lead Sergeant Nicholas Angel. He plays the guy who doesn't know how to switch off. Most of his life is about work. His comedy is straight-up telling jokes as is most of the movie. It is all very peculiar and very British. They purposefully overemphasize this to really show the countryside to the village. Angel is the normal one or "straight shooter" character. He has his Japanese peace lily, and that is all he needs.
Nick Frost plays the second most important character as Danny Butterman. Danny is one of the officers in Sandford who is a very happy go lucky person as is most of the town. The duo of Danny and Angel really blossoms in this film into an epic police and friend partnership. Also, I like the other officers in the movie. Each of them is funny in their own way and adds to the story.
In my opinion, one of the most important aspects of this film is the editing. It defines much of the film, and I think this is a huge reason why I like it so much. The movie could have received a film editing nomination, and I would say it's deserved. Director Edgar Wright is the man behind this, and he did an exceptional job.
