"Animal House": Uncouth Original College Comedy Classic
Updated: Mar 9, 2020
Animal House (1978) is a perfect "what not to do in college" movie. It is hilarious in multiple aspects, and all college students should probably experience it at some point. Think of all frat movie scenes ever, and none of them compare to this film. Read this review to see if you agree! Spoilers may follow.
We follow our freshman protagonist as he is looking at different fraternities, and he ends up at Delta Tau Chi. Little does he know, this will change his life. Whether it's for the best or not is up to you.
The obvious choice for someone memorable in this film is John Belushi. His acting here is so strange that I don't think anyone could perform it the same way. His demeanor is played straight until his spontaneous outbursts appear. He starts a food fight, steals a horse, destroys a guys guitar (unscripted moment). One of the best sequences was him in the cafeteria just piling on more and more food. It's simple yet hilarious.
Other characters were fun too. A young Kevin Bacon graces the scene joining the "prestigious" fraternity as well as the ROTC. Other good performances came from Donald Sutherland as the hippie professor and Karen Allen.
This movie has many memorable scenes. The toga party scene is classic with a performance from Otis Day and the Knights. It's infamous, and you may see this scene played during breaks at some ballparks.
Another scene is the ending. The homecoming parade is coming around as the fraternity faces certain expulsion. They hatch a plan to go out with a bang. Their float is essentially a tank that disrupts everything. John Belushi dresses up like a pirate and wreaks his own havoc. I've been to the Pirate Museum in St. Augustine, Florida. I'm happy to say they had this picture of Belushi from that scene in the movie section.
Overall, it's a great movie. I may haven't even mentioned your favorite part. If you have not seen it, now is your chance. Go ahead, and see if this weird film is for you. My movie rating is an A.
