"The Waterboy": Comedic Gem that Even Mamma Can Love

Updated: Apr 7, 2020

The Waterboy (1998) is the golden age of Adam Sandler comedy. It's disgraceful that it received a rotten score because it has blossomed into more than a cult comedy. Most young adults I know love the film. Read here to see why! Spoilers may follow.

Adam Sandler is the perfect man for this role. It's not for the faint of heart. Bobby Boucher (Sandler) is a simple man who wants everyone to be well hydrated. Once he gets the job for a small Louisiana college, he finds out what a tackler he can be. Bobby is a great character to follow. You can learn a lot from him. He's kind, compassionate and is always looking out for others. Many great scenes come from Bobby too. Anytime he tackles someone, it is hilarious.

Also, they completely overdue the bayou parts on purpose. His house, food and more make it really comical. This involves his mamma too (Kathy Bates). She's entertaining and perfect for the role.

One particular scene that's amusing involves coach Klein (Henry Winkler) and Red (Jerry Reed). Red steals Klein's playbook and gets the coveted job. Red roughly says "Now you're gonna give me this book right here, or are we gonna have to get physical?" The delivery is great. After coach Klein is fired, the camera shows him telling Grandma he didn't get the job. However, the landline is disconnected, and he is wearing high heels. I love it. Some great lines include: "What mamma don't know can't hurt her.", "Do you understand me!?", "Water sucks! Gatorade is better." That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Overall, it's an epically funny movie. There's so much in this movie that I can't even write about because I can't do it justice. If you have not seen it, what are you waiting for? Do it now! My movie rating is A+.
