"The Santa Clause": He's Coming to Town

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

I just had a "holy crap sometimes I'm dumb" moment. Upon beginning this article, I realized the title is wordplay. A "clause" is a bill or a contract, so they replace the regular "Claus" with "clause". Anyways, The Santa Clause (1994)... is a fun family comedy starring Tim Allen. Read here now!

For a refresher, Scott Calvin mistakingly makes Santa slip off his roof. When he disappears, he reads the card with his son (Eric Lloyd) that told him to put on the suit unwittingly making him the new Santa Claus.

Tim Allen is a staple in many people's childhood including my own. He voiced Buzz in Toy Story, starred in the popular Home Improvement television show and was Santa Claus. He is excellent in the role. He's a divorced father trying to brandish a nice holiday experience for his son. He reacts just how any other person would. He thinks becoming Santa was a dream. How would you not?

Other characters to mention are Bernard (David Krumholtz), Laura (Wendy Crewson) and Neil (Judge Reinhold). All of them performed admirably. Reinhold was actually in Rome, GA recently for a film festival so cool. Also, I still remember him talking about the Oscar Mayer weenie whistle.

Parts of the movie I enjoy include the inevitable changes Allen goes through. He will shave, and the facial hair instantly grows back. He is putting on weight faster than anyone. At his conference meeting, everyone orders a salad while he orders a buffet. I enjoyed him attempting to go to his first houses for presents too.

Aesthetically, it was nice. Watching fireplaces magically appear is really cool. The north pole itself is pleasing too. I think its production design is exceptional. For a kid, it seems like a magical place.

Overall, it's a decent movie that deserves some continued watches. My movie rating is B.
