The Nice Guys (2016) is an unconventional buddy comedy in the '70s with a potent combo of Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. These two actors provide great chemistry with a fascinating script for a quality movie. Read here for a spoiler-free review!
First and foremost, the actors make this movie. Ryan Gosling is in a different kind of role than most viewers are used to him performing. March (Gosling) is a derpy yet competent private detective. He is hilarious in this role. A quote from him is "Someone had to question the mermaids!" You'll have to watch to know what I mean. In my opinion, it's one of his best so far, and I would have liked a nomination for him.
Speaking of nominations, the daughter Holly (Angourie Rice) deserved one too. You may recognize her in Spider-Man: Far From Home as well. She gives a better performance than most teens I've ever seen in movies. Also, we have Russell Crowe's character, Healy. He gives a subtle performance as an enforcer who beats people up for money. There's a dynamic between Healy and Holly that forms.
Another integral part of the film is the script. The writing is excellent in dialogue and story. Finding Amelia (you'll hear that name a lot) is the key focus. Following this story is great. The chase involves our protagonists in the sleazy parts of L.A. society. Some trials happen along the way along with a bunch of dark humor, so that may be your kind of story. Also, John Boy (not from The Waltons) makes for a great villain. Oh ya, Robert Downey Jr. is in the movie too. Well, he plays a dead body because why not.
