"The Holiday": Personal Favorite Christmas Romance

Updated: Mar 31, 2020

The Holiday (2006) is a fun, dramatic, and romantic Christmas movie. Out of the few of these I've seen, this is my favorite, and I'll tell you why! Read it now.

To set up the story, two different women want to get away for the holidays. They find each other on a house swap website with one being from L.A. and the other from a small village near London.

The two main actresses are excellent in Kate Winslet (Iris) and Cameron Diaz (Amanda). Both combine passion, joy, and sadness into complicated roles. Personally, I enjoy the friendship between Iris and her older interim neighbor Arthur (Eli Wallach). Hearing about the golden age of Hollywood is neat especially for a movie lover like myself. Arthur is an old man who worked in the industry for decades, and he doesn't want the spotlight anymore. Watching Iris help Arthur get into shape for his award is heartwarming.

The two actors are great as well. Jack Black may be a comedian usually, but he can do it all. He's done dramatic acting in Peter Jackson's King Kong and a romantic performance for this film. Black played it naturally. Jude Law gives the best performance to me. He acts like an aloof charmer but is really a family man. Plus, I enjoy many other films he has been apart of. His and Cameron Diaz' relationship blossoms. You could feel their emotions like it was really happening.

Essentially, you should give The Holiday a watch. I'd honestly put this in my top romantic comedies of all time. My movie rating is an A.
