The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) is teetering on the edge of rotten versus fresh for critics. You might think it's not as good then, but the audience score is actually higher as of today than the first two films. Who is right? Read and find out! *Minimal Spoilers*
I initially had my doubts about James Wan not directing although he was involved with the movie. However, Michael Chaves proves that he can capably fill in telling the Warrens story.
➡️STORY: Based on a true story (take that as you will and decide how much is actually true), the Warrens are investigating a murder that may be linked to demonic possession.
The first two Conjuring films are haunted house movies, but the third installment is different. There are more thriller aspects involved. Think of the movie Seven with Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt as an example. I wonder if some critics devoted lower scores to the film because they were expecting the straight horror approach. Don't get me wrong. There are plenty of scares especially for people like me who don't watch many horror pictures. I appreciate and believe the slight alteration gives way for quality world-building.
We get to see more of the Warren's world specifically seeing the other side. <The occult> It's interesting having some antagonists besides the standard demon that is human. That would sound backward if this was a normal movie. This can lead you down a freaky rabbit hole, so maybe just watch the movie with the fictional occult only.
As I've written before, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are excellent as the picture's protagonists. They're the center of this picture and continue to be exceptional.
➡️Fun Fact: The opening scene has someone movie and twisting on what I consider inhuman ways except that it was real. Nearly any movie would have CGI'ed the moment, so leave it to The Conjuring to get a contortionist.
I don't think this movie is a downgrade although that was the critic consensus. The little changes are good changes, and it grows the Conjuring Universe. Watch for yourself and decide! My film rating is an A-.
