The Conjuring (2013) took me for a loop as I wanted to look away but couldn't seem too. This horror flick lands as my new number 1 in the genre. I wasn't sure how I was going to react being that demon movies is not something I usually enjoy, but this one is different. Read here for the spoiler free review!

To start, the movie is claimed to be based off a true story. Take that as you will I suppose. The Warrens are real people (Ed died in '06 while Lorraine is alive). It takes place in 1971, and a family is being terrorized inside their new home. This is the basis for the film.

Patrick Wilson as Ed Warren and Vera Farmiga as Lorraine Warren is great casting. Wilson is an underrated actor (you may know him from Aquaman). He and she do a fantastic job as the paranormal investigators. Farmiga's role is a little more difficult due to her being clairvoyant. Also, Ron Livingston is good as the father of the family.

The story is simple yet effective. It is the actors, editing and James Wan, the director, who make it one of the best. Wan knew how to maneuver the landscape due to his extensive experience in horror films. The tension in many moments is significant. An iconic scene is the handclap. To introduce this, they play the game hide and clap. The seeker is blindfolded and can get three claps from the hiders. This isn't a spoiler due to every promo for this film having the handclap as seen here.

Overall, it's a great cinema piece. I had to walk outside for a few minutes after finishing the movie, so I'll gauge that as quality filmmaking. My movie rating is an A+.
