"Spaceballs": Mel Brooks at His Finest

Updated: Mar 28, 2020

Spaceballs (1987) is a comedic masterpiece that many people can enjoy. This Mel Brooks film tackles the task of parodying Star Wars. This undertaking is well received across audiences, and people still watch it today! Read here for the review

Our story begins with Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) betrothed to a boring prince that she doesn't love, so she runs away with her robot Dot (Joan Rivers). However, the Spaceballs planet has hatched a plot to steal her planets' oxygen.

My favorite performance in the cinema piece is Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet. You may remember him as the neighbor in Ghostbusters. His comedic mind is gold, and I really enjoy his work. Many of the best jokes in the film involve his character including "ludicrous speed", "comb the desert", and "getting strawberry jammed." Other actors do an excellent job including the late John Candy as Barf. This dog-human hybrid helps keep us entertained.

Speaking more on the comedy, I enjoy how a lot of Mel Brooks' films break the 4th wall. Dark Helmet and his officer pick up the movie Spaceballs in the movie. They do this to see where Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) has gone. They eventually fast forward to the present where they are watching themselves on the television.

Another funny part is how bad the Spaceball people are at shooting (in reference to Storm Troopers of course). The protagonists are performing a prisoner rescue, and they can basically do whatever they want and not get shot. Other funny jokes include Mel Brooks as the president of Spaceballs and Yogurt of the Schwartz. The president has air he sniffs out of a can, and Yogurt has a gift shop for merchandising purposes (again in reference to Star Wars). Because of this joke, they had Spaceballs paraphernalia throughout the movie including towels, cups, and more.

This comedic film is always a riot to see. If you haven't seen the movie yet, you are missing out. I'll probably see this film again soon. My movie rating is an A.
