Sleepy Hollow (1999) is an underrated horror mystery film. This Tim Burton film is weird of course due to the director, so that may contribute. Read here to see if this is for you!

Our protagonist, Ichabod Crane, played by Johnny Depp is tasked with investigating murders in the town of Sleepy Hollow. Very quickly he realizes something is different, and he has to figure this out. The film is based on the original short story from Washington Irving. Some liberties are taken obviously to make it a full-length movie.

Again, Johnny Depp is just as kooky as ever for this role. His performance is intriguing and subtle at times then over the top at others. The main female protagonist is exceptional too in Christina Ricci as Katrina.

The main reason for me this movie exceeds is the set. Others agree with me since the Oscar the film received is art/set direction. Every scene has a specific dark hue that keeps you wondering. The sky is constantly overcast and gray. The townspeople are worried and quiet. No scene is truly relaxing. When people's heads go flying, there is going to be some gore. The Headless Horseman gives us plenty of those moments, and his origin story is interesting. It's a little weird that Christopher Walken is the guy, but I suppose it fits in with the movie's theme.
This film is a horror mystery. A huge part of the film is figuring out why the horseman is back, and is he acting on his own? It's interesting to follow along and see. Other parts include great cinematography and costumes (both Oscar nominations).
