"Shrek 2": Far, Far Away One of the Best

Updated: Mar 28, 2020

Shrek 2 (2004) may be my favorite animated film from this century. I said recently that the first Shrek is one of the best too, but the second installment edges it out (0ur readers agreed). Read here why! Spoilers will follow.

Many moments of this movie feels iconic to me. It's basically my childhood in a nutshell because I've lost count how many scores of times I have seen the film. As I have said previously, the voice acting is phenomenal. Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy are irreplaceable as well as Cameron Diaz.

Another fantastic performance comes from Antonio Banderas. His Puss in Boots is an epic addition to the cast. Maybe the best part of the film is his introduction to Shrek and Donkey. The cute little kitty eyes he gives after trying to kill Shrek is all it takes to be forgiven. Another moment with him is when the guards find catnip on him.

There are too many exceptional scenes to talk about, so I'll attempt to narrow it down. The castle raid scene at the end with Mongo, Gingy and all is fun to see. Also, the whole factory shindig is hilarious. Everything involving Prince Charming or The Fairy Godmother is marvelous. I like the scene where they go to The Poison Apple. It's a villain's bar with people like Captain Hook and the ugly stepsister (who has a rather deep voice). Even the serious moments are classic. Shrek is considering whether he is truly good enough for Fiona and isn't sure. That's the movie's theme. Can "happily ever after" really happen for them? It's clever and something that adults can appreciate too.

The soundtrack to this film is impressive. I legitimately have the CD in my car right now that I listen to now and again. Such songs as Accidentally in Love grace my speakers from time to time.

Overall, it's one of the most watchable films of all time. I don't get tired of this cinema piece and for good reason. Agree with me? If you're not sure then read the first movie review below. My movie rating is A+.
