"Rush Hour": Great Comedic Duo of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker
Updated: Mar 28, 2020
Rush Hour (1998) is a hilarious buddy cop comedy with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. These two have unlikely chemistry that cultivates into pleasurable cinema. Read here for the review!
The Chinese Consul's daughter is kidnapped so Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) is brought in to find her. He teams up with Carter (Chris Tucker) who's an LAPD officer with a big personality.
I won't tell you it's an award winner or a decade-defining movie. However, it is extremely rewatchable which I define as an important trait, especially for comedies. Chan and Tucker make the film. The other actors are fine, but they don't compare to the on-air chemistry the protagonists employ.
The movie feels very 90's. A lot of you know what I mean. The jokes, music, directing and more gives it that feel. I'm calling it now that 2020 will have a lot of 90's nostalgia, and the '80s will start to phase out from number 1.
This film has a lot of moments, and those are why I continue to watch. One moment includes the fight scene at the restaurant. The fighting choreography is fantastic. It's just as good as any action movie. I also like Chan in the pool room. Another is, of course, the ending scene with the bomb around all the priceless Chinese artifacts.
Soo Yung, the kidnapped daughter (Julia Hsu), is very funny in the scene mentioned above too. Also, I want to point out that Jackie Chan does 100% of his own stunts. He started out as Bruce Lee's stunt double, so maybe he's the real deal instead (I'll accept the hate mail). Nearly every line that comes out of Chris Tucker's mouth is hilarious. There are dozens of moments throughout that can make me laugh out loud.
Overall, it's a hilarious film you should see. My movie rating is A-.
