Saving Private Ryan (1998) is an incredible film from my favorite director Steven Spielberg. Every scene is directed perfectly. It is gritty then smooth, loud then quiet, serious then silly and much more. He knew what each moment needed to feel like for maximum enjoyment. Tom Hanks is perfect for his role as Captain Miller. Sometimes we forget that in WWII every day men were thrust into action, and Hanks fills this position. Most critics agree that this film portrays the battle at Normandy beach, known now as D-Day, the best. It was brutal.
All of the actors went through boot camp. Many of them wanted to quit because of the intensity, but Tom Hanks kept them together.

Thousands of young men died on this quest to retake Europe from the Nazis. What helps make this scene iconic is that it's the opening in D-Day. The story of the movie goes on after these incredible shots. The guy picking up his arm is memorable and referenced throughout other media forms. This is the one of the best war scenes ever put to film.
The storyline is interesting as a special task force is ordered to retrieve Private Ryan Matt Damon) deep in enemy territory. Lots of discussions between the soldiers occurs because of this task.
