Mulan (1998) is one of my favorite Disney movies ever made. Memorable characters, meaningful stories, and impressive animation make for an excellent film. This article serves as a reminder for all Disney cinema lovers. Read it now!
First off, this picture features one of my favorite cartoon characters ever in... Mushu. Eddie Murphy's voice is distinguishable and adds another level to this role. Mushu is funny, different and persistent. He has a thirst to prove himself to his peers after flubbing the first time. That mirrors the situation in many adults' life. For kids, it's a lesson for the future to try again even if you mess up the first time.
The title character Mulan is a great role model character. She gives up everything to save her fathers life. She leaves behind her home and enters the military, for she knew what had to be done. Also, her ballad (Reflection) is an underrated song in a film full of great music. Click here for that song.
Speaking of music, I'll Make a Man Out of You is a song I love, and I listen to it often (listen here). Many movies have had training montages including Rocky, and this one stands tall with the best. I think the three friends are awesome too along with Shang.
Even back in the '90s, cartoons took more risks. Take the bath scene for instance. Mulan goes to take a bath, and some of the men show up making some fine comedy. Essentially, I'm saying Disney is too scared to do something like that today.
Also, I really enjoy the battle sequences especially the avalanche scene. It's dramatic but somehow manages some jokes with Mushu that are funny. The capital scene at the end is great too.
Overall, it's one of my favorites! My movie rating is A+.
