John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) is a fantastic follow-up to the hit original movie. Action movies come and go in droves, but this franchise is different. The only other modern comparable franchise is the Mission Impossible films. All three current movies are fantastic, but this may be the best so far. *No major spoilers*
The franchise's universe is fascinating, especially after this movie's world-building. We get to see the underground connections of how they get their guns, clothing, and information when on the job. Seeing a new continental is sweet. Also, it shows how considerable this world is in terms of influence. Conceivably normal everyday people are apart of this organization. The production company, Summit Entertainment, has a real franchise on their hands that I'd love to see expand to more platforms. I could see a television show involving the world. I can see video games. "John Wick Hex" came out already, but they're thinking much too small. That was barely advertised and was a tactical only game. Think BIGGER as in open-world platforms and travel between the Continentals among other things. I'm making myself excited thinking about the idea.
Still on expanding, Wick travels overseas. I always knew it was international, but it's great to see it in action. Watching him fight among ancient Italian structures is epic. Plus, the all-black look he sports there is my favorite look. I may try to pull that off one day.
They stay creative and entertaining with the action scenes. When you have former stuntman turned director Chad Stahelski and writer Derek Kolstad doing every screenplay, it's going to play out nicely. My favorite fight scene is the ending one at the modern art showcase. They brilliantly use the lighting and mirrors for full effect.
Another reason this franchise stands out is its technical efforts including lighting and cinematography. Most action movies show people fighting and say "Isn't that enough?" John Wick says no! There is a conscious effort to be at the top in these categories too.
I can't write a John Wick article without mentioning Keanu Reeves. Next to Neo in The Matrix, this is his most iconic role (PS. John Wick is better and I'll fight over that). He was 53 when he made this movie, and that blows my mind. Also, it's great to see Lawrence Fishburne on-screen with Reeves again.
John Wick: Chapter 2 is a thrill ride. I just watched it, but I may find an excuse to again and show it to a friend. My film rating is A+.
