"Ghostbusters": Ghoulishly Good Classic

Updated: Mar 12, 2020

Ghostbusters (1984) is a film watched year-round, but it's a perfect Halloween film too! This iconic cinema piece has been treasured for decades, and maybe you need reassurance why, so read here!

To start, the cast is marvelous. Bill Murray highlights the list as Dr. Peter Venkman. In a twist, Murray portrays a straight man character even though he is usually some kooky guy.

Dan Aykroyd (also co-writer) is Dr. Raymond Stantz. Harold Ramis (also co-writer) is Dr. Egon Spengler. After that, we have Sigourney Weaver as Dana and Ernie Hudson as Winston. The person I really want to highlight is Rick Moranis as Louis. You may remember him in movies such as Spaceballs (review here). He is funny and helps make the movie for me.

This film has a deluge of memorable moments. An easy one comes at the beginning of the New York Public Library. An unsuspecting librarian is shocked by the ghost Slimer. Other moments include the Stay Puft marshmallow man, catching Slimer at the hotel, and more.

This movie is known for many other reasons too. The theme song is an obvious one (listen here). Also, the logo and the car is instantly recognizable. They turn an old hearse into the ghost-catching vehicle. Even the uniform they wear is classic. Thousands of people dress as the Ghostbusters for Halloween every year.

I won't pretend this movie is full of great editing, cinematography or ingenuitive film making. Essentially, the story is original enough, and the actors make the movie.

Overall, it is a classic movie, and it will always be remembered as such. My movie rating is A-.
