"Elf": Son of a Nutcracker!~Comedic Staple of the Holiday Season

Updated: Mar 12, 2020

When Elf (2003) was released, none of us really knew what this movie would snowball into. A 78% from Rotten Tomatoes audience score is insane. Here's a quote from a supposed top audience reviewer " Nope, it doesn't make any sense to have Will Farrel to play the Elf, somewhat disturbing and childish." Yes, they spelled his name wrong not me. I'll tell you why it's the role that made him a household name, so read here!

A human who thinks he's an elf discovers the truth and journeys to NYC to meet his father. Director Jon Favreau (Iron Man) does an amazing job putting this picture to screen.

Will Ferrell is our star as Buddy the elf. This role saved Ferrell's career and made him an A-lister. He was afraid that this film was his last chance to make it, and he didn't know how it would go. To summarize, most people I know watch it every year and sometimes twice. No one could have done this role quite like him. It's a Christmas staple full of good morals, fun, and laughs.

Another notable performance comes from Zooey Deschanel as Jovie. She has a beautiful singing voice and is fantastic as the love interest. Also, James Caan as Walter is great. He's the birth father of Buddy, and he has some real character development. He essentially starts out as a scrooge and becomes something more. Other illustrious performances come from Bob Newhart as Papa Elf and Edward Asner as Santa.

This article would be as long as the movie if I included every memorable moment, so sacrifices will be made... Let's start!

Mr. Narwhal exclaims "Bye Buddy, I hope you find your dad." I can't underestimate how much this quote has affected my life. Not a week passes where I don't say this. Buddy the elf stumbles upon a furry little friend, and he tries to hug him. Buddy wonders into a store called Gimbels while waiting, and he hears that Santa is coming. He decides to spruce up the store, and it's a great montage. After that, he ends up being attacked by the fake Santa who quotes "Smells like beef and cheese."

Buddy ends up singing a duet of "Baby It's Cold Outside" with Jovie not knowing she was nude. Another memorable scene includes the snowball fight. The now-iconic quote is when Buddy yells "Son of a nutcracker!" He then ensues on a tirade of a no mercy snowball massacring.

Buddy ends up in jail at one point so Walter, his father, bails him out. Buddy goes to live with him and his family, and many things transpire. He decorates the house, builds a rocking horse out of furniture, wants to be tucked in, and he really really really likes sweets. Some items located in his spaghetti include pop-tarts, syrup, chocolate and more. Also, don't forget when Peter Dinklage beats up Will Ferrell.

Other moments include dancing in the mailroom, ice skating (romantic moment), buying lingerie for his father and much more. This isn't a pointless comedy. The morals are excellent. Christmas cheer is what a lot of people need in the holidays.

"The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear." It's a heartwarming scene to see many New Yorkers singing carols in harmony. Everyone watching on TV joins in including the Gimbels manager played by Faizon Love. We don't get enough of these moments anymore, and it's important to think about these things in our own lives.

Again, I apologize for leaving anyone's favorite parts out. Elf is a timeless classic I'll watch every year. Smile a bit and have a Merry Christmas! My movie rating is A+.
