Deadpool (2016) is one of a kind film. It was a HUGE risk because it could have flopped hardcore. However, it didn't. Read here why...
Ryan Reynolds is a weird dude. Not many other actors are strange enough to take on this role. Deadpool is known as the "merc with a mouth", and he reallllyyy leans into that. Most of us know what happened to this character when he was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). While that film wasn't bad, they literally sowed Deadpool's mouth shut. How opposite is that of the character?
This film took various identities and rolled them into one. #1 is that it's an R-rated superhero comedy. There had been a few of those before but not many. Then, we have multiple 4th wall breaks (film character talking to audience). It was a risky attempt, but it paid off...literally. It grossed 783.1 million dollars. That's a lot of moolah for a superhero film with a 58 million dollar budget. For comparison, 2016's Suicide Squad had 175 million dollars to play with (and that film sucked).
The advertisers of Deadpool really went for gold. Of course, they had normal trailers, but they had a series of kooky shorts. Deadpool killed Mario Lopez to announce the R rating as an example. Also, there are plenty of stills crafted for advertising.
Three other characters I enjoy in this film are Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, T.J. Miller as Weasel, and Karan Soni as Dopinder. I especially enjoyed Miller talking about Reynold's face with various metaphors.
Remember, this is an R film. If you haven't seen it, know that now! It may be strange, but see it as an art form.
