There are many entertaining events in the winter Olympics including half-pipe snowboarding, speed skating, curling (duh), and bobsledding. The bobsled race is four men pushing a metal sleigh to ride 80 mph down an icy slide. It is incredibly fast and dangerous.
Cool Runnings (1993)is based on the true events of the Jamaicanbobsled team from the '88 Calgary Olympics. The small island nation produced an unlikely team to put their nation in the spotlight.
I have been watching the '22 winter Olympics and decided to give this movie a try. It was recommended to me multiple times before, but I never knew much about the story or the type of movie. This is made by Disney in the early '90s, so it has a particular flair of comedy and pacing. Think of George of the Jungle or The Santa Claus.
Cool Runnings has the famous comedian, John Candy, as the coach. Any scene he is in is better than without him. You may remember him as the polka king in Home Alone or in starring roles in Spaceballs and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. He passed away in his early 40s leaving much speculation as to how high his ceiling could have been.
The actors representing the bobsled team all perform their roles well. While none have become household names, they all are still acting or producing. None of the four are Jamaican. Three hail from NYC while one is from the country of Trinidad and Tobago. The comedic relief character, Sanka (Doug E. Doug) had some funny moments particularly.
The movie is educational. You a lot about the sport of bobsledding and some about Jamaica. I am sure some kids who grew up with this movie became fans of the sport.
If you need a light-hearted movie that has some laughs and is fun, Cool Runnings may be the picture for you. My film rating is a B+.
