"Coco": Visual Treasure and Musical Fun

Updated: Apr 28, 2020

On my crusade of Pixar-binging, Coco (2017) was next! I've heard frequently about the film, and it was time. Read here, and spoilers may follow...

Story: Miguel's family has banned music due to hurtful history, and he desperately wishes to be a musician. He enters the Land of the Dead to seek out his great-great-grandfather.

Being in a fictional world, it was a great opportunity for dazzling visuals (Note: they did it). The color palette chosen is full of purple, orange, and yellow. The bridge is my favorite. You can imagine what the pedals feel like under your feet: soft, silky and gentle.

The Land of the Dead is essentially an alternate version of a city. It's similar including government, streets and buildings. Everything just has a little pizazz whether it be the colors or Tetris style skyscrapers on little mountains. It's a cool place.

Not many Disney films earn their PG-13 rating, but Coco does. 2 people die on screen via poisoning and being crushed by a bell. That's hardcore.

The music is wonderful. "Remember Me" won the Oscar, and I understand why. I've always enjoyed this type of music being a trumpet player all throughout school. We performed Spanish music in multiple shows, and maybe I'll get a little better at guitar!

The main character, Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), is a fine character. He wants to follow his dreams no matter what.

There are two things I would have changed. #1 is the grandmother. She only redeemed herself at the very very end after being restrained by Miguel's father. Up until then, her niceness was false. She was only nice when everyone was doing what she wanted. #2 is that Miguel never questions about how his great-great-grandfather left the family. He never said, "Maybe he'll explain why." All it would have taken is one line of dialogue to not lose some points.

Overall, I think it's a great entry for Pixar. My film rating is A-.
