"Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery"~ Swingin and Groovy
Updated: May 18, 2021
This spy thriller spoof features a 1960s agent known as Austin Powers. This James Bond parody is a hilarious comedy that has many cult followers and for good reason too. Dr. Evil freezes himself to escape, so Powers freezes himself too until the 90s to stop his terror. Read here!
Mike Myers is hilarious as the title character Austin Powers. Oh ya, he's the antagonist too known as Dr. Evil. You can tell he had a lot of fun doing both of these roles. With Dr. Evil, Myers is supposed to resemble James Bond's nemesis Blofeld. He had the same fluffy white cat as well. However, the freezing alters Mr. Bigglesworth into a sphynx (that's a furless cat).
Funny moments from this performance includes all his plans already happening while he was frozen, using a button to cast people off the chair, purposely making a convoluted way to kill Powers that's escapable, and his request of $1 million. Don't forget the classic pinky pose!
The button scene is hilarious partly because of an actor you may have heard of named Will Ferrel. This bit part had him survive the chair and he continues to yell for help interrupting Dr. Evil. The "one million dollars" line has become widely remembered. $1 million in the 90s isn't a whole lot, and the UN just laughs at him.
Myers as Austin Powers has a plethora of hilarious moments too. One such scene involves Powers being attacked on the toilet greatly confusing the high-roller in the next stall. Another would be Powers trying to turn a cart around in the hallway taking forever and much more. I must point out that while Powers is considered a ladies man in the movie, it's obvious he would be repulsive in modern times. His haircut to his clothes to his unkempt teeth doesn't fit anymore, and that makes it funny.
For a comedy film, the costume design is superb, and I'm not pulling your leg. Go back and watch the opening title sequence with Powers introduction. It's excellent. Also, the score is quite catchy. Other fine performances come from Elizabeth Hurley as Vanessa and Seth Green as Dr. Evil's son Scott. The father-son group meeting scene is pretty funny too.
Perhaps my favorite line comes from Number Two (Robert Wagner). He confronts Dr. Evil about destroying all he has worked for and voice-breakingly exclaims "I've had enough of you pushing me around!" It gets me every time.
Overall, it's a really funny movie that should be on more people's watch lists. My movie rating is A-.
