There is a spoiler three paragraphs below, so skip that one if you haven't the movie. With that being said, Aquaman (2018) is a fun ride.
I wish this film came out before Justice League did. The average audience member would care a lot more about Aquaman after seeing his background. You see why he believes what he believes. The conflict introduced is nothing new storytelling wise. It is a classic tyrannical king related to the hero, and that hero is the rightful king.
The story stays fresh mainly from the director's pacing. James Wan did an incredible job directing the movie. Because DC films give so much freedom to their directors, some of the movies in the universe are terrible, okay or excellent. Aquaman was the second excellent film next to Wonder Woman (2017). Several shots from this movie looked like paintings so much so that you could legitimately sell them in stores.
In a great way, you can tell that James Wan is normally a horror director. Certain scenes make you notice the tenseness felt by the characters. Jason Momoa (Aquaman) gives an adequate and entertaining performance as the underwater superhero. The side characters may not be as good as the ones from Wonder Woman overall but still, do a good job. Amber Heard (Mera) provides a thrilling female lead. Also, Patrick Wilson (King Orm), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Manta) both provide decent villains that rival Aquaman.
Slight spoiler here. I do not have many problems with the movie, but there is one major oversight in the final battle scene. When Aquaman bursts out riding the colossal underwater creature, several of the Brine people die, and they were fighting on his side. Several thousand were crushed by the creature when it showed up, but no one questions this. Why? They mention that there are too many casualties at one point but not that Aquaman is responsible for killing several of his own allies. Other than that, I do not really have any other complaints.
