"A Quiet Place": Thrilling and Instant Horror Classic

A Quiet Place (2018) is one of the best horror films to come out in several years. A unique idea combined with excellent filmmaking produced this as an instant success. There will be a spoiler three paragraphs below, so skip that if you have not seen the film.

John Krasinski and Emily Blunt co-star in a post-apocalyptic world where the creatures are blind but have highly sensitive hearing. The world's remaining survivors must stay silent to live. The daughter (Millicent Simmons), who is deaf in real life, is already deaf before the apocalypse started, so the family communicates mostly in sign language.

Many things are done right in this movie. Krasinski is the main actor and the director, and he does this perfectly. The timing, suspense, and lack of sound keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time. I do not think I ever relaxed while watching this movie except for one scene, and I mean that in the best way possible. Great movies will do that.

There are very few actors on screen, but they all perform exceptionally well. Also, I really enjoyed the production design. Subtly placed items give you hints as to how everything began and how the world was reacting. The small amount of dialogue was enough. No words were wasted, and it helped the character development. Speaking of, you may think a picture with little speaking would have no character development. However, the sign language combined with situational measures accomplished this task.

A Quiet Place is an overall excellent film. I have never been a big horror fan, but movies like this deserve attention. My movie rating is an A.
