8."Captain America: Civil War": Game Changing Film
Updated: Mar 11, 2020
Captain America:Civil War (2016) is an interesting movie. This pits the Avengers against each other, and we see how a master manipulator can change things so quickly. Read here for the score! Spoilers may follow.
This movie cracks the top eight for several favorable reasons. First off, even though we knew the avengers would need to make-up at some point, it did not take away from the intensity of the situation. Heroes fighting heroes never leads to anything positive.
This is all spearheaded by mastermind Zemo (Daniel Bruhl). Bruhl is an exceptional actor who brilliantly performs his role, and I think he was unfortunately underused. Many of your average cinema-goers probably don't appreciate this performance enough. It's not the most flashy role or dominating, but it is executed to perfection.
Not knowing much about the comics, I am okay with his character being different from the comics. The writers adjusted his character from a physical enemy with a giant sword to a master of wit. Also, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as The Winter Soldier/Bucky and many more give wonderful performances as usual. For the plot, it's nearly Avengers 2 and a half.
Captain America is still the main character, but Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) plays a huge role as really an antagonist. Being an antagonist doesn't make you the villain but just someone who opposes the protagonist. Iron Man leads the opposing Avengers against Captain America's side. With this storyline, two new major characters were introduced. Black Panther, performed by Chadwick Boseman, is crafted into the script with Wakanda being part of the Sokovia Accords. The same can't be said for the other major character.
Spider-Man is acted very adequately by Tom Holland, but his character is forced into the movie. The timing felt off, and it took me a while to like his character personally. If I wrote this article after the first time I watched Captain America: Civil War, I would have said some negative things about his character and ranked the movie lower. However, I understand how the writers are using Spider-Man now. Other than that, this movie is excellent.
Overall, this is generally an underrated Marvel Cinematic Universe film. It is one that deserves to be rewatched if you have only seen it once. My movie rating is an A.
