Doctor Strange (2016) is another entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this film, we delve into the mystic arts and more of the quantum realm. This origin film is one of the better ones made from Marvel. Read here why I think that's the case! Spoilers may follow.
Dr. Stephen Strange finds himself in a terrible automobile accident, and he has badly damaged his hands. His career as a prominent surgeon is in the balance, but western medicine is failing him. He travels far east hoping to seek a cure. He finds more than what he seeks.
As I usually do, let's start with some actors and actresses. Benedict Cumberbatch is excellent casting for Doctor Strange. You'll have to get over not hearing his memorable British accent for all of his fans. He gives everything necessary for the role. Someone else could have done the role too, but he plays it very well. Also, Rachel McAdams as Dr. Christine Palmer, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, and Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius are all fantastic.
This origin story is believable and compelling. It's not groundbreaking but adequate. Everything a good origin movie should have it does. There's the tragedy, love interest, adjusting to new powers, big villain, problems with friends, death of someone close, and a giant obstacle to overcome. It checks off all the major points. The editing and CGI are especially acceptable in this movie. Almost all MCU movies are like this too, but I think this movie had a hard job of making Dormammu not look stupid. They needed him to not look cartoony, and it was accomplished.
There's nothing majorly wrong in this cinema piece. I think Kaecilius (villain) was kind of a pushover at times than an epic force that is hard to beat. I understand he was accumulating more dark power, but the gap was still too wide. Doctor Strange probably was too good too fast. That happens with a lot of movies where people who trained for years lose easily to the hero.
Overall, it is a solid entry. It missed the top five just barely, but it is still a great film. My movie rating is an A.
