3."Guardians of the Galaxy": Fun Film We Didn't Know We Wanted
Updated: Mar 12, 2020
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) is a fantastic movie that we didn't even know we wanted. Most people including myself knew nothing about this relatively obscure comic book. These characters took the big screen by storm and have become immensely popular. Read here for the rating! Spoilers may follow.
Let's start by saying how Chris Pratt as Star-Lord/Peter Quill is great casting. He fully embraces the character. It is hard to imagine a different actor in this role. Other actors and actresses were good too including Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, and Bradley Cooper.
Who knew that Cooper as a talking raccoon named Rocket would be so entertaining? It was such an odd casting choice for him to be Bradley Cooper, but it worked. Also, the soundtrack is memorable with songs like Hooked On a Feeling.
The editing, sound, and cinematography are top-notch. James Gunn is the perfect director for the movie. The plot is interesting. A young Quill has just lost his mother then gets abducted by aliens, and he grows into a talented scavenger. The team of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot is fun to watch, and I definitely mean Groot in this movie, not the sequel where he's an annoying kid. This combo proves for quality banter and even emotional scenes.
The villain was alright. Ronan was nothing special, but he was a solid enough antagonist along with Nebula. It gave the Guardians plenty of challenges to overcome creating some fine moments. Knowhere is a cool place in the movie. A smuggler's destination inside a celestial's skull floating in space is pretty cool. Benicio Del Toro was a weird and quirky character that fit the scenes well.
The problem someone might have is if they didn't like a joke somewhere. Other than that, it's a solid cinema piece.
Overall, this movie deserves to be in the top three or at least the top five of most people's MCU lists. My movie rating is A+.
