Thor: The Dark World (2013) was the eighth MCU movie made, and it was the same year as Iron Man 3. That year is the weakest year for all of the long-standing Marvel Cinematic Universe. See why here. Spoilers will follow.
What this movie does well they do very well. Most of the scenes that take place on Asgard are near perfect. Thor and his companions provide their usual charming banter and contribute nicely to the plot. Characters like Sif are interesting even though they have relatively small parts. The action scenes are excellent when on Asgard but not as much when on Earth. The prison break scene is pretty cool and well done. Other decent parts of the movie include the CGI. There are not any major issues with this part.
However, there are some problems with this film. Christopher Eccleston as the villain Malekith is forgettable. He can be a very good actor, but this role lands him as one of the least best MCU antagonists. It is hard to match roles like Loki played by Tom Hiddleston.
Another problem I had was Natalie Portman's character, Jane. Again, this is an exceptional actress who did not give much to her role. The character seems off most of the time, and she also lands herself as one of the least best love interests in the MCU. I mentioned this a little already, but the Earth scenes do not fare well against those on Asgard. The pacing, directing and writing does not flow as well. I wish I could be more descriptive, but this is more of a feeling for me. Sometimes that may be the best way to judge some movies for yourself.
