Captain Marvel (2019) came out to theaters about five weeks before the hotly anticipated Avengers: Endgame (2019). This new MCU hero is one that many people don't know a lot about including myself. I was excited to experience the story for the first time. Here's my review! Spoilers will follow.
Captain Marvel is a woman who gets stranded back on Earth, and she is trying to stop the Skrull invasion. She will find out more about her past as she fights her way.
There are many things I really enjoyed in Captain Marvel. To start, the 90's setting was fun for a lot of the older MCU fans. Her falling into a Blockbuster brings back some great memories. My favorite part is Goose the cat. I would be Samuel L. Jackson when he stops in the mission to pet Goose because I love cats so much.
For acting, Brie Larson is a great choice to play Captain Marvel. She allows the intensity and sensitivity needed. With that being said, the character is a bit boring, and I don't blame Larson. The source material for Captain Marvel was never top-notch. I'd still consider Black Widow to be the superior female hero.
Jude Law is perfect for his role as well. Per usual with most MCU movies, the CGI was steller. A lot of moving parts, visuals and colors were all over the place, and it all worked perfectly. The plot was interesting by expanding what we know about the Kree's. This alien race has been throughout the MCU, and we got to see their side of the matter. I didn't know much about the Skrulls, and I like the route they took by making them people just trying to find their own home.
There are only a couple of "issues" I would say. Number one is I would have had Brie Larson fight Jude Law at the end. It would have been much more satisfying to see her be able to beat him one-on-one with no powers. Instead, they opted for a quick one-liner that was disappointing. This probably keeps the film from jumping up a couple more spots on my list. Second, the editing was a little slow at points which is different from most superhero films.
Overall, it is another solid entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans should watch this movie. If nothing else, watch for Goose the cat. My movie rating is C+.
