12."Avengers: Endgame"~Forever Changing the MCU *SPOILERS*
Updated: Aug 24, 2021
*SPOILERS* Including Avengers: Infinity Wars, this movie is the biggest of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers: Endgame (2019) is something most of us have been waiting for years to see. Twenty-one previous films had been leading up to this moment, so did it live up to expectations? We all knew "the snap" would be reversed but did not know-how. It's more about the journey there sometimes than the end. Read here and see if you agree!
The movie begins with "the snap" having occurred recently, and the remaining Avengers aren't sure what to do. They quickly track Thanos, find him, but they find out it's too late as the infinity stones have been destroyed. In anger, Thor kills Thanos. Five years pass...
I knew some time would pass, but five years is more than I expected. It shifts the landscape. Half the world disappeared, and everyone else is picking up the pieces. Many people have moved on. Stark has a daughter now, so it was not surprising to see him reluctant to take a chance on time travel. It's true. This is a time travel movie or a time heist as Ant-Man describes. Anytime a film tackles this subject, it is tricky. No matter what you do, there will be plot holes. The movie even talked about how other films got time travel wrong then they still had a mistake or so. The way it stays together is because they return all the stones. I guess Captain America could have returned the hammer also. If he didn't, that would be an issue. That moment was super awesome when he's holding the hammer at the final battle scene. What can I say about acting? Everyone did a superb job. All actors and actresses gave it their all to make this a quality film. I really appreciate the use of Hawkeye/Clint Barton in this movie. He has always been underused, but he was primed for a big role this time.
We knew people would die. Some of us had some good guesses who but didn't know how. The first one I did not guess. Black Widow/Romanov (Scarlett Johansson) gave up her life to get the soul stone. Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) wasn't going to just let her, and he tried to be the one who died. However, the way it happened is the best way. Barton has a family he could get back. Romanov did not, and she knew he needs to be the one to survive.
I wondered if Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) might be the one to go out in a blaze of glory then I assumed it would be Captain America (Chris Evans). I think that is why Stark had the stones and the glove because it would be too obvious for Evans's character. Stark and Strange had that moment of understanding knowing there was only one way. We all know that RDJ is the one and only Iron Man. I hope Kevin Feige at Marvel doesn't try to replace him and puts his character to rest. It was his perfect ending, and it needs to stay that way. Although Cap did not die yet, he traveled back to live his life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). This is his perfect ending. They finally got their dance.
The movie had some issues. Mainly, the movie should have been 20 or so minutes shorter. Several jokes went on way too long. Ant-Man in the diner with the kids and hulk when they time travel to 2012 New York lightly smashing a car has hard to watch. Those are only a couple of them. The pacing was bit off for awhile. I am perfectly okay with a slow burn pace when done right like on FX's The Americans. However, the Russo Brothers mishandled this in my opinion. Here's a simple way to section the cinema piece. The first half was some of the least best in the MCU while the second half is some of the best.
Overall, it was pretty good. There is so much more to say about this film. I think if I had lower expectations, I would let more things go that happened. The movie is not by any means the greatest as some people suggest. We are feeling emotional about some of the deaths, and that's why it is being said. I had a good time watching it, and I'd suggest it to my friends. My movie rating is an A-.
