Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) is easily the best-animated feature from 2018. As decent as The Incredibles 2 was, Sony Pictures Animation outperformed Disney and Pixar.
I will leave out any spoilers because you deserve the chance to watch this movie without everything being told. With that being said, I loved several things in this film. First off, the animation is spectacular. They could have taken the easy route and just have done 3D animation like everyone else. That was not their play. Some passion and time combined with ingenuity crafted the incredible animation displayed on the screen. This and excellent film editing laid the groundwork.
The writers bought in completely to the comic book style and it paid off. All of this with interesting characters like Miles Morales as the new Spider-Man made the movie flow very well. His story is not inherently as interesting as the Peter Parker Spider-Man. He is a middle-class kid going to a good school with loving parents. It is the movie's writing that conveys his personal problems, and this creates the central issues. Many studios may have blundered a storyline with these complexities involving multiple dimensional characters, but Sony did a great job.
I will make this paragraph very simple. I do not have any issues with this film. It is near perfect in every category.
As I am writing this sentence, the Golden Globes announced Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as the best-animated picture of the year. I expect every other major award show to follow suit. Another thought has crossed my mind too. Every year we see an arthouse film that does not deserve the best picture nomination at the Oscars and gets one. Sometimes they even win (The Shape of Water for example). Why can not this animated film secure one of the ten spots for the best picture?
In conclusion, watch this movie. If it is still in theatres near you, I would encourage the trip. I am happy I went to go see it with a couple of my friends. Otherwise, watch for your streaming services or at your nearest video store. The message is timeless and can touch everyone's hearts. My movie rating is A+.
