John Wick (2014) is what every action movie wants to be in modern cinema, and few accomplish this feat. Keanu Reeves creates yet another iconic action star! Read here how the trilogy is so successful. Spoilers may follow.
Let's start with the story building. An interesting world is created in an underground hitman network. It is very sophisticated with lavish hotels, bars, and a set of rules to follow. John Wick is a well-known man in this world, and he is called "Baba Yaga". In the movie, they say it means the boogeyman when it actually means a witch, but that is permissible for the theme of the movie. Keanu Reeves is a great choice for the character as well as the rest of the casting. If you were wondering about his career, Reeves line "I'm thinking I'm back" says it all.
Not many of the actors and actresses are big names in Hollywood, but they played their roles near perfect. What can I say about the action sequences? They are top-notch. I think the directors, Chad Stahelski and David Leitch (uncredited), knew exactly what they wanted.
These stuntmen turned directors are especially impressive considering it was their directorial debut. Let's get the hard part out of the way. If you have not watched the movie and hate spoilers, don't read the next few sentences and go to the next paragraph. Everyone hates what happens to the dog (including me). However, it was necessary for the plot. This final gift from his wife that was taken away motivates his drive for revenge.
There's not much that I disagree within the film. The biggest issue was at the very end with the fight between John Wick and Viggo. He was obviously better than Viggo but stabbed himself anyway to break the mob boss's arm. That didn't make much sense. There may have been a line or two that was a little out of place, and that is all.
Overall, this is a fantastic movie and the pinnacle of modern action. Only the Mission Impossible Franchise can compare. This is required viewing for everyone. Watch John Wick. My movie rating is an A.
