"It": Floats Down Here~To the Top

Updated: Mar 18, 2020

It (2017) was one of the most anticipated horror movies to date. When It finally arrived, it did not disappoint in theaters. High critic and high audience scores were delivered. This remake has the benefit of high budgets in a theatrical release that it's predecessor did not. Read here to see if they took advantage of this, and spoilers may follow!

I'd like to start with the star. Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise the clown is steller. It is hard to follow up on the famous performance from Tim Curry as the monstrous clown, but he lives up to the role. This Pennywise is just as silly, creepy, scary and more. Let's look at the kid actors and actresses. All of them are excellent casting for the roles. Every moment from each one of them is believable and feels real.

I knew this film would involve some gore given its nature, but I wasn't quite prepared for the famous sewer grate scene at the beginning. Little Georgie gets his arm bitten off on screen, and it shows him trying to crawl away. That is riskier than many movies are willing to go since it does involve a kid. It paid off though. This really set the tone for how the movie would shape up.

Stephen King is one of our generation's most successful authors, and It is one of his most revered stories. Countless horror flicks come out every year, but only a few stand out. For example, this movie is the most money-making horror movie of all time. Warner Bros hit a home run with this tale. Many people including myself are eagerly anticipating the sequel coming out later this year. I'm not a horror movie fanatic by any means, but I am ready!

There is not much wrong with this cinema piece. One or two of the shocking/scary moments came across as slightly funny when it wasn't supposed to be. It could be the filmmaking. It could also be our decreased sensitivity to violence via games, social media, etc. That's an entirely different discussion though. Other than that, the movie plays out well.

Overall, I highly recommend this horror film even if you are not usually a fan. The Losers Club will fight on. My movie rating is an A.
