School of Rock (2003) is a true 2000's film. It is one of the most popular comedic films from the first decade of the millennium. All of us who grow up watching it wished we were apart of that band. Who doesn't want to rock out with Jack Black? Read here for the review! Spoilers may follow.
No one besides Jack Black could have been Dewey Finn (our main character). His casting made the film into what it means to us today. The rockin substitute teacher's original intention was to gain a paycheck, but he gains so much more than that. While his reason for starting the kid's rock group is bad, it changes him for the better. The kids learn a lot socially and musically. Many of them come out of their shell including Lawrence the keyboardist. He was really shy and didn't have many friends, but the band helped him realize his potential.
Of course, this happening in real life would be terrifying for parents. This is why the script is so excellent because they show this. The parents teachers night doesn't go well for Jack Black. He is outed as being the fake substitute and gives up. Thankfully, the kids pull through, and they convince him to compete. Also with the script, it surprised me when they lost the battle of the bands to Jack Black's old band. However, it was smart, and they got to have the deserved encore moment.
Also, Joan Cusack is excellent as the school principal. It isn't a bland performance you see in most shows or movies. She plays the serious parts well then has some let loose moments too.
The music is rockin of course. It is a rock n roll comedy. It's not rap, country, classical or pop but rock.
For negatives, there isn't much to say here. Some lines could have been rewritten here and there, but you can say that for a lot of films.
Overall, it is a great film! Jack Black is superb. This film will be remembered for many years to come. My movie rating is an A.
