Draft Day (2014) is a somewhat interesting movie. I say somewhat because the common movie-goer could find it boring. However, a die-hard NFL fan should find it interesting. I am one of these people, so I decided to watch the movie. Maybe this is for you. Read it now!
Kevin Costner is our protagonist named Sonny Weaver Jr. He is the GM of the Cleveland Browns (but go Falcons!). The role is very straight forward being a gruff man who is stressed about his job. For this film, many players are fictional on-screen while certain analysts or coaches may be the real people.
This film is not devoid of big-name stars. Actress Jennifer Garner is the love interest /colleague at the Browns. She also plays her character straight forward and helps keep things interesting. Also, we see Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther)and Sam Elliot (A Star is Born)among others. Even the director has some big films under his belt. Ivan Reitman directed the infamous Ghostbusters film, so it always had the possibility of being great.
There's not a whole lot to say. All of the little details of the trade deals are interesting to me. If you like to gamble, this could be your film too. Costner trades for the #1 pick, and people assume he'll take the prized quarterback. The movie is about him trying to decide if something is hiding in this guy's shadow, and I kind of like the investigative parts.
For negatives, there's a decent amount of script that's dull. That's my biggest complaint. I feel like it was set up for something more with all the actors but didn't materialize to its full potential.
Overall, it's still a decent film. If you love football, it could be for you. My movie rating is B-.
