"Darkest Hour": Brilliant Telling of England's Gravest Moments
Updated: Mar 11, 2020
Darkest Hour (2017) starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill takes a look at one of the most crucial points in the United Kingdom's history. The Nazi forces had overwhelmed almost all of Europe and with the entire British military stranded to perish at Dunkirk, Churchill had to make world-changing decisions.
The movie ingeniously navigated the near end of the Europe we know. Everything ran perfectly in this movie. Gary Oldman gave an Oscar-winning performance as Winston Churchill. You can only tell it is him by previously knowing this information because of the outstanding makeup provided. That category also won the Oscar. It is impossible to tell which makes this well deserved. Oldman is incredible at being able to transform himself into someone completely different.
The scriptwriting (especially), directing, cinematography, sound editing and everything else you can think of were excellent. Since this film is all about dialogue, the script is important. Never at any point did I think a line was out of place. Also, the rest of the cast was exceptional as well including Lily James.
We did not need to see the battle of Dunkirk to understand the seriousness of the situation. The conversions and their tones told us what we needed to know. England was almost invaded, and Europe would have been lost before the USA would even have been involved.
At this point, I generally try to point out inadequacies. However, nothing is obvious. Anything people dislike about the movie would be nit-picking.
Overall, I was very impressed with Darkest Hour. This movie came out the same year as Dunkirk (2017). Both feature the same conflict but different sides of the coin.My movie rating is A+.
